Cypriot heart donor saves life of Israeli patient

A young Cypriot woman, who tragically lost her life in a road accident, has saved the life of a 45-year-old Israeli patient. The transplant operation was successfully completed on Friday afternoon at Beilinson Hospital in Israel, following a complex logistical operation that spanned only 26 hours from the initial notification of the organ donation.

The process began on Thursday morning when medical officials in Cyprus alerted the National Transplant Center of Israel. After testing confirmed the donor's heart was a match, coordinators had to quickly secure an aircraft for transport, a task complicated by the high demand during the summer holiday season. Emergency funding was obtained, and a larger plane was chartered for the mission. The heart retrieval occurred at 3:00 a.m. Friday in Nicosia, with four different medical teams working in tandem. The Israeli team handled the heart retrieval, while teams from Cyprus and Greece coordinated the removal of other organs, including the lungs and liver.

The recipient, who had been on a transplant waiting list for approximately two years, is now recovering following the successful procedure. The mission highlights the critical international cooperation between medical institutions in Cyprus, Israel, and Greece in facilitating life-saving transplants.
