National memorial service held in Pomos for fallen heroes

A national memorial service was held on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at the Holy Church of Agios Efpsychios in Pomos to honor fallen heroes. The event, organized by the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous and the Pomos Fallen Heroes Committee, commemorated those who died during World War II (1940-1945), the battles of Tillyria in 1964, and the 1974 coup and subsequent Turkish invasion.

The ceremony honored Savvas Antoniou Kazalis, Andreas Orphanidis, Evangelos Roussos, Chrysanthos Dionysiou, Sotiris Ioannou, Georgios Michael, and Prodromos Christofi Tsaousis. A special memorial prayer was also held for the discovery of the remains of missing Second Lieutenant Panagiotis Panagiotou. The service was conducted by Archimandrite Ioannis, with Deputy Minister of Culture Klea Papaellina delivering the keynote address, emphasizing the importance of historical memory and the sacrifices made for the homeland. Following the speeches, wreaths were laid at the local monument.

This memorial serves as an annual tribute to the patriotism and self-sacrifice of those who fought in Cyprus's major 20th-century conflicts. The proceedings concluded with official acts of remembrance to ensure the legacy of these historical figures remains recognized by the local community and the state.
