New European Union regulations on packaging and waste now in effect

New regulations regarding packaging and packaging waste have been implemented across the European Union as of August 12, 2026. The legislation, known as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), establishes a unified framework for all packaging placed on the EU market, regardless of the material used, covering its entire life cycle from production to waste management.

The new rules aim to reduce waste and enhance recycling by requiring that all packaging be reusable or recoverable. By 2030, all packaging must be recyclable, ensuring materials can be reintegrated into the production process. Furthermore, plastic packaging will be required to contain specific percentages of recycled material, with mandatory targets increasing gradually until 2040. The regulation also introduces harmonized labeling requirements to assist consumers and improve the functioning of the single market.

These measures are part of the EU's broader strategy to build a more circular, sustainable, and competitive economy. By streamlining rules, the commission expects to protect the environment and human health while fostering new business opportunities for the recycling sector and providers of sustainable packaging solutions.
