Two deaths and multiple injuries follow wildfires on the island of Salamina

On August 16, 2026, two nearly simultaneous wildfires broke out on the island of Salamina, Greece, in the areas of Peristeria and Selinia. The blazes spread rapidly within seven minutes due to very strong winds, prompting authorities to issue multiple 112 emergency alerts and initiate evacuations. Tragically, an elderly couple was found dead on Andromachi Street in Peristeria, near the reported ignition point of the first fire. Additionally, around ten individuals were treated for burns or respiratory issues at the local health center, and nearly 600 people were successfully evacuated from coastal areas by sea using Coast Guard and private vessels.

Firefighting efforts involved over 260 personnel, specialized forestry units (EMODE), and volunteers, supported by extensive aerial assets including ten aircraft and eight helicopters. While the initial fire was reportedly linked to a refuse-filled lot on Andromachi Street, the Arson Crimes Investigation Department is currently probing the origins of both incidents. As of August 17, authorities reported that the active fronts were controlled, though crews remain on site to prevent flare-ups.
