Two people dead following simultaneous wildfires on Salamina island

Two devastating wildfires broke out on the island of Salamina, Greece, on the afternoon of August 16, 2026, forcing mass evacuations and resulting in two fatalities. The fires began nearly simultaneously at 14:43 in the Peristeria area and shortly after in the Selinia region, fueled by high-category four fire risks and extremely strong winds. The victims, an elderly couple aged 80-85, were discovered on Andromachi Street in Peristeria after being trapped in their home. The fires spread rapidly within minutes, damaging numerous residences and leaving at least ten people with burn injuries.

A massive mobilization involved 260 firefighters, 58 vehicles, and extensive aerial support, including ten aircraft and eight helicopters. The Hellenic Coast Guard assisted in the evacuation of 571 people from coastal areas such as Peristeria, Kolones, and Kaki Vigla via maritime vessels. While authorities reported that there are no longer active fire fronts by late afternoon, crews remain on alert to manage scattered hotspots. The Hellenic Fire Service’s Arson Crimes Investigation Department is currently investigating the origin of the fires, with initial reports suggesting the blaze may have started at a waste-filled lot on Andromachi Street.
