Two fatalities reported as wildfires spread across Salamina

Two active wildfires broke out on the Greek island of Salamina on August 16, 2026, leading to a critical situation as severe winds fueled the rapid spread of flames. The fires started around 14:43 near Andromachi Street in the Peristeria area and subsequently spread to the Selinia region. During the firefighting operations, two bodies were discovered in the Peristeria area. Additionally, four people were transported to the Salamina Health Center with burns, and one elderly individual was rescued from a home in Kaki Vigla.

Firefighting efforts are significant, involving 192 firefighters, 14 aerial assets, and numerous ground units supported by the local municipality. Authorities issued multiple alerts via the 112 emergency system, ordering the evacuation of residents from Peristeria, Selinia, and Kaki Vigla towards Aiantio. The Coast Guard is actively preparing for sea-based evacuations due to the intensity of the blaze. The area remains under a high-risk category 4 for fire danger, and authorities continue to battle the flames amidst challenging meteorological conditions.
