Authorities investigate multiple arson incidents and vehicle fires across Cyprus
Over the past weekend, Cypriot authorities have been grappling with a series of fires across the island. In Lysos, two separate fires broke out on Saturday within 500 meters of each other, prompting officials from the Forestry Department to label the events as malicious. The first fire, which activated the 'Icarus' protocol and required nine aircraft and 57 personnel, burned seven hectares before being contained. A second, smaller blaze followed nearby at 6pm, leading officials to identify a 'triangle' of suspicious activity spanning the Droushia to Prodromi region.
Separately, several vehicle fires were reported. Near Kofinou, a car caught fire while in motion, forcing the driver to exit safely; officials attributed this incident to a mechanical or electrical fault. Meanwhile, in Aglantzia, a vehicle belonging to a 36-year-old woman was destroyed by a blaze that police confirmed was set deliberately. Additionally, a wildfire in Pissouri on Sunday burned four hectares of land, with investigators suggesting a discarded cigarette as a potential cause. Police and the Fire Service are currently increasing patrols and conducting thorough investigations into all suspicious incidents to prevent further property damage during the ongoing heatwave.
