Authorities investigate series of suspected arson attacks in Paphos and vehicle fires across Cyprus
Over the past weekend, Cyprus experienced a wave of emergency incidents, including suspected arson in the Paphos district and separate vehicle fires. On August 15 and 16, two consecutive fires occurred in Lysos, Paphos, situated 500 meters apart. Forestry Department officials stated the incidents point to a malicious act within a recurring “arson triangle” spanning Droushia, Prodromi, and Lysos. In a separate incident on August 16, a wildfire at Pissouri burned four hectares, with initial investigations suggesting a discarded cigarette or roadside start, though it remains under review.
Simultaneously, authorities are dealing with vehicle-related fires. On August 16, a car ignited while in motion near Kofinou, spreading to two decares of dry vegetation; the driver escaped unharmed, and a mechanical or electrical failure is suspected. On August 17, another vehicle fire occurred in Aglantzia, Nicosia, involving a 36-year-old woman's car; police are investigating this as a deliberate act. Meanwhile, probes into a July 27 fire at the Kalo Chorio shooting range are nearing completion, with reports forwarded to the Legal Service for potential disciplinary or legal action by the National Guard and police.
