Recent fire incidents across Cyprus spark investigations

A series of fire-related incidents occurred across Cyprus between August 17 and 19, 2026, triggering police and fire service investigations. On August 17, a major blaze near Pissouri burned four hectares of vegetation and waste, requiring assistance from British Bases and several civil departments before being controlled. Simultaneously, an arson attack on a vehicle in Aglandjia, involving a 36-year-old owner and a suspected acquaintance, resulted in an arrest warrant. On August 18, smaller fires occurred near the Rizoelia roundabout and, on August 19, separate incidents were reported at a barbershop in Deryneia and a residential property in Evrychou, where three vehicles sustained damage.

Separately, authorities are nearing conclusions regarding the significant July 27 fire at the Kalo Chorio firing range, which threatened Agia Anna and Pseudas. Two reports—one by the National Guard’s Brigadier Savvas Stefanou and another by the police—have been submitted to the Legal Service and the National Guard chief, Emmanouil Theodorou. Decisions regarding potential disciplinary measures or criminal liability for the firing range incident are expected soon, with residents awaiting updates on compensation and future safety measures scheduled for mid-September.
