Recent wave of arson and fire incidents across Cyprus
Over the past 48 hours, Cypriot authorities have reported a series of fires across the island, including confirmed arson attacks and accidental blazes. On August 19, a fire broke out at a barbershop in Deryneia, followed by an incident in Evrychou where three vehicles parked outside a 73-year-old resident's home were damaged. Police have confirmed that the fire in Evrychou is being investigated as arson, while the barbershop fire in Deryneia is also under active investigation as a suspected malicious act involving a 24-year-old owner.
Further incidents on August 20 included a deliberate vehicle arson in Agia Marinouda, Paphos, which damaged two additional nearby cars and building property. In other non-criminal cases, a fire caused by an electric scooter occurred in a Nicosia apartment, while a server room at a hotel in Pegeia caught fire due to a faulty UPS system; both incidents were resolved without casualties. Authorities are currently reviewing security camera footage to identify perpetrators in the suspected arson cases, and investigations remain ongoing across all affected districts.
