Vehicle fire near Kofinou and wildfire in Pissouri reported

Two separate fire incidents occurred in Cyprus on August 16-17. On August 16, a vehicle caught fire while moving on the old Kofinou-Anglisides road. The driver escaped unharmed, but the blaze spread to approximately 0.2 hectares of dry grass and vegetation before being controlled at 15:16 by the Fire Service, Forestry Department, and local community units. Authorities indicate the fire originated from a mechanical or electrical fault within the engine.

Separately, a significant wildfire broke out near Pissouri on the afternoon of August 16, burning four hectares of vegetation and waste in a ravine. The fire threatened isolated homes but was brought under control by 19:05 with the support of multiple agencies, including the British Bases and Civil Defence. Police and the Fire Service are investigating the incident, with officials citing a discarded cigarette as a possible cause. Meanwhile, authorities have increased aerial and ground patrols across the Paphos and Larnaca districts due to extreme summer heat and a heightened risk of arson.
