Youth perspective on Cyprus peace efforts following UN Secretary-General visit
Following the recent visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to Cyprus and his meetings with the island's leaders, the focus has turned to the younger generation's outlook on a potential solution to the long-standing division. UN Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin has spent months fostering connections between technical committees and civil society groups on both sides of the Green Line to facilitate dialogue.
Christos Parmakkis, a member of the Bi-communal Technical Committee on Youth, expressed institutional optimism in a radio interview following the Guterres visit. Parmakkis stated that the younger generation largely supports the Secretary-General's initiatives and maintains full confidence in Holguin’s efforts to bridge the gap. This demographic represents a generation that has never lived on a unified island, facing the unique challenge of envisioning a future based on peace in a land they have only known as divided.
While the political process continues, the work of technical committees remains crucial in building social cohesion. Holguin’s mission remains ongoing as she continues to coordinate with various stakeholders to foster reconciliation and explore diplomatic avenues for a resolution.
