Cyprus police conduct nationwide enforcement operations
Police in Cyprus conducted extensive nationwide operations overnight between August 15 and 16, 2026, aimed at preventing crime and maintaining public order. Officers carried out targeted patrols in urban areas and inspected 28 premises, leading to six charges related to offending behavior. The operation involved checking 598 drivers and 204 passengers, resulting in 29 vehicle impoundments.
Authorities made 20 arrests for various offenses, including illegal residence, possession of a knife, drug possession, burglary, theft, and outstanding warrants. Traffic enforcement was a primary focus, with 201 violations reported and 15 additional cases currently under investigation. Specific traffic infractions included 70 cases of speeding and 29 charges for driving under the influence of alcohol following 350 breathalyzer tests. Furthermore, one individual was charged with driving under the influence of drugs after a roadside test.
The initiative was framed as part of a broader strategy to boost the public’s sense of security and deter serious crime. Police stated that these preventive operations will continue daily with an increased presence across the island.
