Police conduct nationwide security operations across Cyprus

Cypriot police conducted extensive overnight operations across the country between August 16 and 17, 2026, aiming to prevent crime and maintain public order. The reports provided conflicting statistics: while some sources (Cyprus Mail, Famagusta Gazette) reported 20 arrests, 598 vehicle stops, 204 passengers checked, and 28 premises inspected, others (Cyprus Times, AlphaNews, Sigma Live) stated that 14 individuals were arrested, 490 vehicles were stopped, 657 people were checked, and 46 premises were inspected.

Traffic enforcement was a major component of the operations. Sources consistently reported hundreds of traffic violations, including speeding and driving under the influence. Specifically, one set of reports cited 201 traffic violations, 70 speeding cases, and 29 alcohol-related charges, while another set reported 212 violations, 91 speeding cases, and 36 alcohol-related charges. Police also impounded between 12 and 29 vehicles, depending on the source. The arrests encompassed various offenses such as illegal residence, possession of drugs and knives, and burglary. Police stated that these preventive operations are part of a broader, ongoing strategy to enhance public security through daily patrols and targeted checks.
