Police conduct nationwide security operations in Cyprus
During overnight operations conducted on August 16, 2026, the Cyprus Police implemented nationwide patrols to prevent serious crime and maintain public order. While early reports from the Cyprus Mail on August 16 suggested 20 arrests, subsequent official police statements and later reports on August 17 confirmed 14 arrests for various offences, including illegal drug possession, illegal residence, knife possession, and assault against a police officer.
During these operations, police stopped 490 vehicles, checked 657 people, and inspected 46 premises. Traffic enforcement was a primary focus, resulting in 212 traffic violation reports, including 91 instances of speeding. Officers conducted 309 alcohol breath tests, leading to 36 charges, and three drug tests, all of which returned positive results. Additionally, 12 vehicles were impounded. Police spokesperson Byron Byronou stated that these intensified security checks, which have resulted in approximately 110 arrests since August 7, will continue daily across both mountain and coastal areas.
The ongoing police initiative aims to boost public security and includes monitoring entertainment venues for operating licenses and underage alcohol consumption. Future operations will remain targeted and frequent, particularly in popular tourist areas to manage the influx of vacationers.
