Death toll from Lake Kariba ferry sinking rises to 84

A passenger ferry operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) capsized in Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba, resulting in at least 84 deaths. While reports initially varied regarding the exact timing, officials confirmed the vessel overturned in the border waters between Zimbabwe and Zambia. The ferry, which had an official capacity of 90 passengers, was found to be significantly overloaded, carrying 114 adults, five crew members, and an unspecified number of children at the time of the incident.

Authorities launched search and rescue operations immediately following the tragedy, with Civil Protection officials reporting 77 survivors early in the aftermath. The accident, which occurred during strong winds, is considered one of the deadliest in the nation's history. Search teams continue to comb the lake to locate additional victims.
