Heavy summer rainfall causes flooding and disruption in Nicosia
Severe weather conditions hit Cyprus on August 17, 2026, causing heavy rainfall and localized flooding, particularly in Nicosia. According to the Meteorological Service, the cumulative rainfall from August 1 to August 17 reached 41% of the monthly normal, with some regions like Athienou and Saittas recording rainfall well above their usual monthly averages. The city of Nicosia was heavily affected, with streets turning into rivers, leading to traffic congestion on the Nicosia-Limassol highway due to limited visibility.
The Fire Service has been mobilized to respond to numerous emergency calls across the Nicosia district, specifically in areas such as Makedonitissa, Engomi, Lakatamia, Strovolos, and Agios Dometios. Responses included pumping water from flooded basements, unblocking storm drains, assisting individuals trapped in vehicles, and addressing electrical hazards caused by sparking cables. While the island-wide rainfall remains below the monthly average of 2.9mm for August, the sudden intensity of these storms triggered significant urban disruption.
Weather forecasts indicate that the unstable air mass currently affecting the island is expected to persist until Wednesday, with clear skies returning by Thursday. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, particularly as isolated thunderstorms and potential hail remain possible in mountainous and inland areas.
