Severe rainstorms cause flooding in Nicosia district
On Monday, August 17, 2026, intense afternoon rainfall struck various areas of Cyprus, with the most significant impact concentrated in the Nicosia district. Authorities recorded flooding in several neighborhoods, including Lakatamia, Strovolos, Engomi, Agios Dometios, and Makedonitissa. The Fire Service received 27 emergency calls to address flooded basements, trapped vehicles in inundated streets, and electrical hazards caused by sparking power lines. Additionally, police issued warnings regarding poor visibility and water accumulation on the Nicosia-Limassol highway, specifically near Kornos and Kofinou.
These weather events occurred as unstable air masses moved across the island, bringing August rainfall to 41% of the typical monthly average by mid-month. While local meteorologists expect the unstable conditions to begin subsiding by Thursday, further localized showers and isolated thunderstorms, possibly accompanied by hail, are forecast for the coming days in inland and mountainous regions. Citizens were advised to exercise caution, move at low speeds, and maintain safe distances while driving. Emergency response teams and volunteers from SupportCY remained on standby throughout the evening to manage the aftermath of the storm.
