Unsettled weather brings rain and storms to Cyprus

Cyprus is currently experiencing unsettled weather conditions characterized by local rain and isolated thunderstorms, particularly affecting mountainous areas, the interior, and parts of the southeast. As of Monday, August 17, 2026, heavy rainfall has been reported across several regions, including Nicosia, Paphos, Latsia, Machairas, and Mathiatis. Authorities, including the Police, have issued warnings for motorists on the Nicosia-Limassol highway due to limited visibility in the Kornos and Kofinou areas.

The Department of Meteorology attributes these phenomena to seasonal low pressure and an unstable air mass. Preliminary data indicate that average rainfall from August 1 to August 17 reached 41% of the normal monthly level, with notable totals recorded in Saittas, Platania, Athienou, and Lythrodontas. Temperatures are expected to remain around 34°C in the interior.

The unstable air mass is expected to persist through Wednesday, with conditions gradually improving from Thursday onwards. Wind speeds are forecasted to reach 4 to 5 Beaufort in coastal areas, while the sea remains slightly rough. Meteorologists warn that hail is possible during storm events, and patchy fog may form during the early morning hours in the south and east.
