Diplomatic preparations ahead of Christodoulides-Erhurman meeting
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are scheduled to meet on August 26, 2026, to discuss the ongoing Cyprus problem. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed that negotiators from both sides will meet in the days leading up to the summit to finalize the agenda and prepare for the discussion. The primary objective is to hold a substantive dialogue based on issues raised during the recent visit to Cyprus by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
The Greek Cypriot side intends to approach the meeting with a constructive attitude, focusing on the potential opening of new crossing points. Specifically, the government reiterates the UN Secretary-General’s proposal for the simultaneous opening of crossings at Athienou and Mia Milia. These efforts are aimed at establishing the necessary conditions for a future expanded informal meeting on the Cyprus issue.
While this meeting seeks to foster communication, officials noted that preparations are still underway for President Christodoulides' trip to New York in late September for the UN General Assembly. There is currently no information regarding a potential visit to Cyprus by Maria Angela Holguin, and the government emphasizes that progress requires a mutual agreement on the nature of the core problem.
