President Christodoulides and Tufan Erhurman to meet for Cyprus talks on August 26
Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman are scheduled to meet on August 26 to discuss the status of the Cyprus issue. This encounter marks their first one-on-one session following the late-July visit of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the island. The agenda focuses on the UN-led efforts to prepare for an expanded 5+1 conference, with specific emphasis on confidence-building measures, the negotiation methodology, and the proposal to open new crossing points, including those at Mia Milia and Athienou.
Preparatory efforts are currently underway, with lead negotiators Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana having met on August 20 for a two-hour session to review the issues. During this preparatory meeting, the Greek Cypriot side proposed intensifying the negotiation process by having the leaders meet twice weekly, though no formal agreement on this schedule was finalized. The United Nations is simultaneously working on a document recording previous convergences to bridge existing gaps between the two sides.
While the Greek Cypriot government maintains a constructive attitude and seeks substantive progress, expectations remain measured. Reports note that Erhurman previously failed to adopt the compromise proposals offered by the UN Secretary-General regarding the crossing points, and officials indicate that no dramatic breakthroughs are currently anticipated at the upcoming August 26 summit.
