Ministry addresses safety concerns regarding Liopetri primary school near military base

On August 17, 2026, the Cypriot Minister of Education, Athena Michaelidou, responded to parliamentary inquiries regarding the proximity of the First Primary School of Liopetri to the Modestos Panteli military camp. MPs Giannakis Gavriel, Nikos Kettiros, and Giorgos Koukoumas raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the students studying near the military installation.

Minister Michaelidou assured that the Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth is treating the matter with significant seriousness and as a preventive measure. She emphasized that the ministry is maintaining close inter-ministerial cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and relevant military authorities to ensure a secure environment for every student.

The Directorate of Primary Education, in coordination with the technical services department, continues to monitor the situation. The ministry remains in direct communication with the school’s administration to stay informed of any developments and to address potential risks effectively.
