Cyprus reports surge in local patronage of hospitality venues amidst declining international tourism
Entertainment venues across Cyprus are experiencing a surge in local patronage during the summer of 2026, according to Neophytos Thrasyvoulou, President of the Pancyprian Federation of Entertainment Venue Owners (OSIKA). While locals are frequently visiting coastal and mountain regions, international tourist arrivals remain lower compared to the previous year. Industry figures indicate that tourist visits to entertainment venues are down by 15% to 20%, a trend attributed to changing visitor spending habits and broader international economic factors.
Official data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus for July 2026 corroborates this challenging environment for tourism. Tourist arrivals reached 582,754 in July, marking a 1.1% decline compared to 589,116 in July 2025. The cumulative decline for the first seven months of 2026 stands at 8%, with total arrivals reaching 2,238,769. The United Kingdom remained the primary market, accounting for 31.9% of total arrivals, followed by Israel at 20.5%. Meanwhile, domestic travel has increased, with 210,047 Cypriot residents traveling abroad in July, an increase of 12.3% compared to the same period in 2025, with Greece being the most popular destination.
