Cyprus ministry announces energy storage grants and clarifies photovoltaic policy

The Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry, led by Minister Michalis Damianos, announced on August 17, 2026, that it will soon launch a grant scheme to support energy storage solutions for businesses. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize national energy infrastructure and promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies.

Addressing concerns raised by Member of Parliament Christos Christofides, Minister Damianos dismissed claims that photovoltaic systems are no longer economically viable as inaccurate. He warned that such misinformation creates unnecessary consumer uncertainty and discourages investment in clean energy. The minister clarified that since January 1, 2026, all new applications for self-consumption photovoltaic installations have been processed under the regulatory framework established by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) via Decision No. 02/2024. Furthermore, the Distribution System Operator (DSO) has issued specific guidelines regarding the connection of active customers and renewable energy self-consumers to the distribution network to ensure regulatory transparency and operational efficiency.
