Fatal helicopter crash in Sifnos claims three lives
On the afternoon of August 17, 2026, a Bell 206 private helicopter crashed near the helipad in the Tholos area of Sifnos, Greece. The aircraft, operated by Bellavia Aviation Services, had departed from Markopoulo and was on final approach to the island when it lost control and caught fire upon impact. All three people on board were killed instantly: the 53-year-old Greek pilot Giorgos Raikos and two British newlyweds, Alexander Cromie, 31, and his wife Marie Ebert, 30.
Video evidence showing the aircraft spinning uncontrollably in the air has led investigators to focus on a potential mechanical failure of the tail rotor as a primary cause. Witnesses reported hearing unusual noises and seeing smoke before the descent. The incident is currently under investigation by the National Bureau for Air and Railway Accidents Investigation and Transportation Safety (EO-DAS-AAM), with authorities also conducting forensic examinations to officially identify the victims.
Authorities, including specialized police units from Athens, have been deployed to secure the site and gather evidence. While initial reports erroneously suggested a higher death toll, officials confirmed that only three individuals were on the flight. The victims were traveling to the island to begin their honeymoon, and the tragedy has prompted widespread condolences from the public and the firm Blackstone, where Cromie was employed.
