Critical blood donation shortage reported in Cyprus

On August 17, 2026, Cyprus faced a significant shortfall in blood donations, with only 100 donors visiting collection centers across the country. Androula Panagiotou, head of the Blood Center, reported to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) that this turnout is insufficient, as the daily requirement to cover medical needs is approximately 350 units of blood.

Despite the low turnout on August 17, authorities are currently managing the situation by utilizing a small surplus generated by high donor participation during the previous week. This buffer allows for the continued coverage of essential medical procedures for the time being.

However, health officials have issued an urgent appeal for increased public participation in blood donation efforts over the coming days. The goal is to sustain adequate supply levels to prevent potential disruptions in the treatment of patients and ensure that all future medical needs are met effectively.
