American citizen detained in Larnaca with 23 kilograms of cannabis

A 36-year-old American national was arrested at Larnaca International Airport after customs authorities discovered 23 kilograms of cannabis concealed within his luggage. Following extensive interrogation by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN), the suspect admitted to knowingly transporting the illicit substances, though he has refused to identify any accomplices or provide further details regarding his network.

Investigations have revealed that the individual’s journey originated in Thailand, with a transit stop in Doha before arriving in Cyprus. The authorities are currently examining his travel route and may seek the assistance of international law enforcement agencies to identify potential recipients of the drugs intended for the local market. This seizure is part of a broader, ongoing effort by YKAN to curb drug trafficking, which has resulted in the confiscation of 320 kilograms of cannabis since the beginning of 2026.

The District Court of Larnaca has ordered the suspect to remain in custody for eight days while the investigation proceeds.
