Iranian drones target Iraqi Kurdistan official offices

On August 17, 2026, drones struck the personal office of Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in the Pirmam area of Erbil. The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Unit investigation determined that the attack also targeted the residence of the head of the region’s Security and Intelligence Agency. Prime Minister Barzani condemned the strikes, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of the autonomous region.

In response to the incident, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement via the IRNA news agency. Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the drone attack, characterizing it as a suspicious operation. Iran emphasized its commitment to maintaining friendly relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan region, alleging that the attack was a plot by common enemies intended to undermine bilateral ties between the two countries.
