Cyprus Third Age Observatory joins global rights alliance

The Cyprus Third Age Observatory has officially become a full member of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People (GAROP), an international coalition comprising over 400 civil society organizations. Announced on Monday, August 17, 2026, this development marks a significant transition for the organization from a regional advocate to a participant with direct influence on the global stage.

This new status provides the Observatory with access to high-level international policy forums. The primary objective of this collaboration is to advocate for a legally binding UN Convention on the Rights of Older People. Furthermore, the partnership aims to facilitate the transfer of international research, advocacy strategies, and best practices directly to Cyprus to improve domestic standards for elderly care and active aging.

The organization recently participated in the UN Intergovernmental Working Group on Ageing in Geneva in July 2026 alongside GAROP. This previous engagement served as a foundational step toward their shared mission of reforming global aging policies and establishing stronger legal protections for the elderly population.
