Averof Neofytou criticizes political handling of the Cyprus issue
Former Democratic Rally (DISY) leader Averof Neofytou has publicly criticized the current government’s handling of the Cyprus issue, specifically questioning the President’s understanding of UN requirements for a multilateral conference. In recent statements, Neofytou suggested that the President either misunderstood the conditions or misled the public, calling both scenarios problematic.
Furthermore, Neofytou has accused both major traditional parties, DISY and AKEL, of historical failures regarding the Cyprus conflict. He specifically blamed AKEL for rejecting the Anglo-American-Canadian plan and the Annan Plan, while charging DISY with the failure of the Ghali ideas and the collapse of the Crans-Montana talks. He argued that both parties prioritized perceived political costs over bold decisions.
Beyond his policy criticisms, media reports indicate tension between Neofytou and current DISY leadership regarding his exclusion from potential presidential polling for the 2028 elections. Despite this, Neofytou has not ruled out a return to frontline politics, while continuing to host supporters at his residence in Argaka, maintaining his political presence throughout the summer.
