Nicosia DLGO awaits funding for hazardous building repairs
The District Local Government Organisation (DLGO) of Nicosia is currently awaiting approximately €2 million in funding intended for the remediation of hazardous buildings. Konstantinos Giorkatzis, president of the DLGO, stated that the organization is awaiting formal instructions from the Ministry of Interior regarding the application process to access these funds.
The funds were originally allocated to the Nicosia Municipality by the Fund for the Revitalisation of Border Areas. Following the recent local government reforms in Cyprus, the responsibility for managing these dangerous structures and the associated budget was transferred to the DLGO. Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos confirmed that the Interior Ministry has assured the authorities that the financial resources remain dedicated to the Nicosia municipal district due to the specific origin of the funds.
Despite the delay in the release of the capital, the DLGO and the Nicosia Municipality have begun conducting joint inspections of various structures. The municipality is utilizing its existing registry of buildings to expedite these assessments. Under the new administrative framework, responsibilities are bifurcated: the municipality handles nuisance-related issues, while the DLGO retains primary responsibility for addressing structural dangers.
