Cyprus summer hunting season begins with new regulations
The summer hunting season in Cyprus commences on Sunday, August 23, 2026, marking the start of hunting activities across permitted rural and forest areas. A key development for this season is the decree issued by the Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, which allows for the hunting of the laughing dove (Streptopelia senegalensis) from August 23 until September 20, 2026. This specific hunting derogation is restricted to hunters holding a valid 2026–2027 license who use the Artemis Cy application, with a total national limit of 30,000 birds. Individual hunters are capped at 50 birds for the entire period and 20 per excursion, with activity allowed from sunrise to sunset.
In preparation for the opening, the Cyprus Federation for Hunting and Wildlife Conservation and the Department of Forests have issued urgent appeals for safety and environmental responsibility. Notably, hunting for turtle doves and quails is strictly prohibited during the first two outings on August 23 and 30, with these species becoming legal targets only from September 2, 2026. Authorities emphasize the importance of target identification, strict fire prevention measures in forest areas, and the proper disposal of spent cartridges to avoid pollution. Hunters are reminded that all activities must comply with the laws on the Protection and Management of Wild Birds and Game.
