Escalating military strikes in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip
Recent days have seen a significant intensification of military conflicts in both Ukraine and the Gaza Strip. In Ukraine, a series of mass Russian missile and drone attacks struck Kyiv, its outskirts, and Kryvyi Rih between August 20 and 21. At least 16 people died in the Kyiv region, while 14 were killed and over 120 injured in a double drone strike on a commercial center in Kryvyi Rih. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks, which targeted residential buildings, a pediatric hospital, and schools, and called for increased international support for Ukraine's air defense capabilities.
Simultaneously, the Gaza Strip experienced deadly Israeli airstrikes targeting the port area and various buildings. Local health authorities and the Civil Defense reported at least 10 deaths, including children, following strikes on a police station and areas housing displaced civilians. The Israeli military stated these operations targeted Hamas commanders planning attacks against its forces, while claiming to have taken measures to minimize civilian harm. Meanwhile, the UN has warned of a severe environmental and humanitarian crisis, noting that only 3% of agricultural land in the Gaza Strip remains accessible due to expanded military exclusion zones.
