Escalation in hostilities between Russia and Ukraine results in multiple casualties
On August 18, 2026, a series of large-scale aerial attacks occurred between Russia and Ukraine. In the Kharkiv region of Ukraine, a Russian missile strike on the community of Pechenihy killed at least 10 people and injured between 8 and 17, as reported by regional military governor Oleh Syniehubov. The attack damaged residential buildings, a post office, a café, and several vehicles.
Simultaneously, the Russian capital region faced a massive drone offensive, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reporting 620 intercepted drones between the previous night and 05:00. Regional governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed three injuries, including a 10-year-old girl, and a fire at a warehouse owned by the e-commerce firm Wildberries. Ukrainian forces also faced a separate wave of 147 Russian drones throughout the night, of which only 11 were reportedly intercepted.
These events follow a month described by the UN as the deadliest for Ukrainian civilians since May 2022, with hundreds of casualties recorded. Emergency services in both nations are currently conducting search and restoration operations at the sites of the strikes.
