Severe storms bring record rainfall to Cyprus
Cyprus has been experiencing extreme weather conditions this week, characterized by intense thunderstorms and hail, leading to a yellow weather alert from the Department of Meteorology. Heavy rainfall on August 17 hit Nicosia and Larnaca, with the rescue service responding to 27 emergency calls in the capital due to flooded basements, stalled vehicles, and blocked storm drains. The storm intensity has been significant, with localized rainfall reaching 62.2 mm in Makedonitissa and 47.2 mm in Xyliatos within 24 hours, far exceeding the average August monthly norm of 2.9 mm.
While the current weather remains unstable with continued warnings for the inland areas and the Troodos mountains through August 19, the meteorological outlook indicates a shift later in the week. By Friday, August 21, the island is expected to see a return to clear skies followed by a new heatwave, with temperatures projected to reach 41 degrees Celsius in Nicosia. Meteorological director Filippos Timvios noted that although these localized downpours represent 131% of the monthly average, many coastal and western areas of the island remained largely dry, highlighting the isolated nature of these severe events.
