Yellow weather warning issued for Cyprus
The Cyprus Meteorological Service has issued a yellow weather warning for Tuesday, August 18, effective from 13:00 to 18:00. The alert covers the island's inland areas, the Troodos mountains, and the western coast, with additional reports suggesting the eastern coast may also be affected. Residents should prepare for severe thunderstorms and potential hail, with rainfall intensity expected to reach up to 35 millimeters per hour in some regions.
This alert follows a series of severe storms that impacted Nicosia and Larnaca on Monday, August 17. The emergency rescue services responded to 27 distress calls in the capital, where residents reported flooded basements, stalled vehicles on flooded roads, and clogged drainage systems. Some citizens also reported electrical issues, including sparking utility poles. While Cyprus Butterfly reports that storms also affected the Trikomo area on Sunday, August 16, the current warnings remain focused on immediate public safety as the island deals with the aftermath of these extreme weather events.
