Monk remanded in custody for attempted murder in Paphos
The Paphos District Court has ordered the remand of a 51-year-old monk until October 7, when he is scheduled to appear before the Paphos Criminal Court. The defendant faces charges of attempted murder, illegal possession of an offensive weapon, and carrying a knife. The legal proceedings concern an incident on August 7 at the Ayios Neophytos monastery in Tala, where the monk allegedly attacked a 53-year-old monastery employee with a paper cutter during a dispute over a cell key.
The court cited the severity of the charges and the risk of the defendant fleeing the country as primary reasons for its decision, noting that while the monk has ties to the Republic of Cyprus, they are insufficient to ensure his presence at trial. Defense lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou strongly opposed the remand, arguing that a conviction was unlikely and that his client had no motive to flee, describing the suspect as a figure held in high regard by the local community.
The conflict originated from a long-standing dispute regarding the monk's occupancy of two monastery cells, one of which was previously used by his father. According to monastery representatives, the monk had refused to vacate the space for approximately four years despite repeated requests from the abbot. The accused will remain in police custody until his appearance in the Criminal Court on October 7.
