Cyprus launches tender for smart traffic signal upgrades in Nicosia and Limassol

The Department of Public Works under the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has launched a tender for the supply, installation, programming, and operation of vehicle-actuated traffic signal systems. The project targets 15 signal-controlled junctions, including seven in Nicosia and eight in Limassol, with an estimated budget of €41,900 excluding VAT.

Using above-ground detectors (AGD), the new system will enable adaptive control by monitoring vehicle traffic in real time. This dynamic adjustment is intended to reduce vehicle delays, minimize queue lengths, and decrease overall travel times, while simultaneously improving road safety and network reliability. The project is fully funded by national resources.

The deadline for submitting bids is September 18, 2026. According to the ministry, the project implementation is expected to begin in early October, with a completion timeline of three months. One source, Cyprus Mail, reported the budget as €41.9 million; however, this appears to be a typographical error, as all other sources and the context of the scope consistently cite €41,900.
