Ministry of Education to discuss new teacher appointment system with unions
The Cypriot Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth is set to hold meetings with educational unions in the coming days to discuss a proposal for a new teacher appointment system. The proposal was formally submitted by Minister Athina Michailidou at the end of July. The objective of these upcoming meetings is to facilitate an exchange of views and receive feedback on the working document provided by the Ministry, aiming to reach a consensus where possible before the proposal is officially presented to the Parliament.
Teacher unions, including POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK, are currently coordinating their positions. POED President Myria Vasiliou confirmed that their executive board will meet on August 27 and 28 to review the Ministry's proposal, noting that there appear to be shared concerns and disagreements among the three organizations. A formal meeting with Minister Michailidou is scheduled for August 31, and the unions plan to hold a joint consultation session next week to align their strategy regarding the reforms.
