Severe weather and localized floods impact Cyprus

Cyprus experienced significant weather instability over several days in August 2026, characterized by intense, localized thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, particularly in mountainous and inland areas. The town of Kyperounta saw unprecedented water levels, prompting cleanup efforts as residents dealt with damaged roads and flooded fields.

The current period of instability is expected to subside by Thursday, August 20. Forecasts indicate a return to clear, summer weather with a gradual rise in temperatures, which are expected to reach 40°C in the interior by the weekend. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, while citizens have been advised to remain cautious during the final phase of the weather event.
