Russia and North Korea reaffirm military cooperation

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently addressed a message to his North Korean counterpart, Choe Son Hui, emphasizing the shared commitment of both nations to establish a new global order based on mutual interests. The communication specifically acknowledged the role of North Korean personnel in military operations within Russia during the conflict with Ukraine.

In late 2024, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un deployed an estimated 14,000 soldiers to support Russian efforts to repel a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region. Following these operations, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially declared victory in May 2025 and publicly expressed gratitude for Pyongyang’s military assistance. Lavrov’s recent statement highlights this ongoing collaboration as a continuation of historical ties, pledging that both countries will continue to boost cooperation across all sectors to ensure regional and international security.
