Thalassemia patients call for National Blood Strategy in Cyprus
Patients with thalassemia in Cyprus are advocating for a comprehensive National Blood Strategy to address systemic failures and chronic staffing shortages within the national blood center. Miltos Miltiadou, President of the Pancyprian Thalassemia Association, emphasized that the current infrastructure struggles to meet demand, particularly during holiday periods like the mid-August season when donor participation traditionally declines.
Historically, these operational gaps and poor communication strategies have forced the postponement of life-saving transfusions for chronic patients. While Miltiadou noted that the current August has not yet seen mass cancellations despite low reserves, he warned that the weeks following the mid-August holiday remain the most critical period for blood supply stability. The push for a structured national policy follows years of lobbying by patient organizations aimed at securing a more sustainable and reliable system.
The development of the National Blood Strategy is intended to permanently resolve staffing issues and optimize donor outreach. Patient advocates hope this initiative will provide a long-term solution to the recurring scarcity that threatens the health of individuals relying on regular blood transfusions.
