Prominent sociologist Konstantinos Tsoukalas dies at age 89

Renowned academic, sociologist, and member of the Athens Academy, Konstantinos Tsoukalas, passed away on August 18, 2026, at the age of 89. Born in Athens in 1937 into a family with a strong background in law and politics, Tsoukalas held an extensive academic career, teaching at universities in Greece, the United States, France, and Mexico. He served as president of the National Centre for Social Research and held a position as a SYRIZA MP in the Greek Parliament.

Tsoukalas earned his law degree from the University of Athens before pursuing postgraduate studies in legal philosophy and sociology in Germany, France, and at Yale University in the United States. He became a doctor of letters and humanities at the University of Paris in 1974. Throughout his professional life, he worked as a lawyer in Athens, a researcher at the National Centre for Social Research, and held professorships at the University of Paris and the University of Athens. His cremation is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, in Ritsona.
