Doctors in Sri Lanka remove record-breaking bladder stone
Surgeons in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, performed a rare medical procedure last week, successfully removing a 3.1-kilogram bladder stone from a 55-year-old male patient. Measuring approximately 17 centimeters in length, the mass is potentially the largest and heaviest ever recorded and surgically extracted from a human bladder. Lead surgeon Prahalahan Balakrishnan noted that the stone's weight is comparable to that of a full-term infant, with physical dimensions resembling an ostrich egg.
The patient had been admitted to the hospital following a stroke. During his recovery, medical staff identified significant urinary difficulties, leading to diagnostic tests that revealed the massive calculus. Following the successful surgery, the patient is currently in recovery, and medical staff reports that his condition is stable as he continues to recuperate under observation.
