USS Benfold suffers major power failure in South China Sea

On July 24, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Benfold experienced a significant mechanical failure involving its generators while conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific. The incident left the 10,000-ton vessel without sufficient electrical power for four days, rendering the ship unable to maneuver under its own power in the South China Sea. During this period, approximately 300 crew members faced harsh living conditions as systems including air conditioning, kitchens, sanitation facilities, and potable water supplies were compromised by the outage.

The US 7th Fleet, represented by spokesperson Commander Matthew Comer, confirmed that the issue was a mechanical accident rather than a combat-related event. No injuries were reported among the crew during the ordeal. To mitigate the crisis, the cruiser USS Robert Smalls provided cooked meals and other essential support to the crew of the disabled destroyer. The Navy has praised the professionalism of the Benfold's crew in managing the difficult situation during a period of extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius.
