Portuguese tourist murdered in Albania following a bar altercation

A 20-year-old Portuguese tourist, identified as Miguel Mendes, was fatally stabbed in Ksamil, Albania, on August 18, 2026. The incident reportedly began inside the Principote bar following a dispute involving the harassment of a woman, which escalated into a violent confrontation on a nearby beach. Following a police manhunt, 29-year-old suspect Sokrat Vata was apprehended near Levan after being discovered hiding in the trunk of a vehicle driven by a woman with a Turkish national as a passenger.

In addition to the primary suspect, authorities have detained eleven other individuals as part of their investigation into the circumstances of the homicide and the specific roles of those involved. The suspect has denied intentional killing, asserting that the weapon belonged to the victim and that he was merely attempting to intervene in the fight.
