Cyprus and India elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership
On August 19, 2026, the Presidency of the Republic of Cyprus announced the elevation of its diplomatic relationship with India to a Strategic Partnership. This move aims to deepen cooperation across several critical sectors, including national security, defense, counter-terrorism, technology, innovation, maritime affairs, education, and connectivity.
This upgrade is intended to foster political coordination and provide new avenues for economic growth. Cyprus already holds a position among the top ten investors in India, with its investment portfolio having doubled over the past decade. The partnership is expected to facilitate easier access for Cypriot businesses to the Indian market, while simultaneously establishing Cyprus as a key gateway for Indian trade and investment into Europe.
The development marks a significant shift in foreign policy, reflecting Cyprus's intention to leverage India's status as a major global economy. By strengthening these ties, the government of Cyprus seeks to create tangible geopolitical and economic benefits, formalizing a "historic relationship" into a structured strategic framework that aligns the interests of both nations within the international community.
