British bases police prepare to combat illegal bird trapping

The British Bases (BB) Police in Cyprus have announced a zero-tolerance policy ahead of the upcoming migratory season for Ampelopoulia, which begins on August 31. The Community Action Team (CAT) is currently conducting intensive surveillance operations within the Eastern Sovereign Base Areas to prevent the illegal trapping of birds.

Authorities are utilizing advanced technology, including drones, license plate recognition systems, and specialized monitoring equipment to track and dismantle trapping infrastructure. Sergeant Giannakis Loukas, head of the CAT, stated that the team is fully prepared to identify, arrest, and prosecute any individuals found engaging in illegal trapping activities, such as the use of nets and lethal lime sticks.

This initiative follows long-term efforts to maintain near-zero levels of bird poaching within the British military zones. The police are cooperating with various governmental and non-governmental organizations to ensure the protection of migratory birds throughout the autumn period. Operations remain ongoing as authorities continue to monitor potential trapping sites to deter prospective poachers.
