The 1974 assassination of US Ambassador Roger Davies in Nicosia
On August 19, 1974, three days after the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, US Ambassador Roger Davies was shot and killed inside his office at the US Embassy in Nicosia. At the time, Cyprus was gripped by intense anti-American sentiment, with the public blaming the US, NATO, and the CIA for their perceived role in the recent coup and subsequent invasion. Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the embassy, engaging in violent protests that turned the area around the Hilton Hotel into a battlefield.
Davies was on the second floor of the embassy with four staff members—Eddie Edwards, Stella Charalambidou, Antoinette Varnava, and Charis Evangelides—when gunfire erupted. Masked individuals hidden within the crowd fired at the building. A bullet shattered the office window, and another struck Ambassador Davies in the chest, killing him. Antoinette Varnava, a 30-year-old embassy employee, was also killed during the attack.
Despite decades of investigations, the collection of ballistic evidence, witness testimonies, and the existence of film footage, the murders remain officially unsolved. No individual has ever been convicted for the killings, and the exact chain of command, the identities of the shooters, and the definitive motive remain subjects of historical debate and unresolved legal inquiry.
