Cypriot first division football clubs face tax payment deadline issues
Several Cypriot first division football clubs are struggling to meet a August 20, 2026, deadline to pay new tax debts totaling approximately €1 million. While these clubs, specifically APOEL, Anorthosis, Apollon, and AEL, have already paid around 50% of the owed VAT and income tax, they have requested an extension of several weeks to cover the remainder. The debts were accumulated since May, even after the clubs received certification from the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) confirming they met UEFA criteria for participating in local and European competitions.
While the affected teams continue to adhere to repayment plans for older tax debts, the Tax Department is currently reviewing the request for an extension. Tax Commissioner Sotiris Markidis is considering a grace period until early October, emphasizing that the department's goal is to ensure the collection of revenue rather than forcing the closure of the clubs. The clubs have provided assurances that they will fulfill their obligations if given the requested time, as they prepare for the start of the domestic league season on August 28.
